Gigantic Lipoma in Dog
Lipomas are benign masses made up of exclusively fat cells lying just under the skin with limited mobility. These are not cancerous and thus do not spread to other tissues. They do not cause any pain as such but can become a hindrance in free movement due to their location. In that case, especially when they grow big, they need to be surgically removed. Biopsy is recommended.
The furry angel you see in the pic was suffering from a massive lipoma. The tumour must have been growing for a long time, given its size. Though not a cause of pain, the heavy lump sure made the dog’s movements hampered. It had to be removed surgically so that she could move freely again. Our vets performed a surgery and finally took the weight off her chest (literally!). The lipoma weighed a whopping 5.4 kilos. It was almost killing the delicate dog with burden!
Stray dog population is a challenge for all developing countries. In our country, municipal corporations have dedicated departments and funds earmarked for sterilizing the stray dogs. Animal Birth Control (ABC) is the only legal, humane and effective way to keep dogs from growing in numbers and in the long run, make our cities free from strays. This is a question of not just civic sense but compassion too. The life of an ownerless dog is fraught with apathy and suffering. From fighting for a morsel of food, often in garbage bins, fighting with other dogs for dominance, territory and mate; getting whacked by sticks and stones by cruel people to surviving illness and injury, life for it is pain, pain and more pain. Unless some responsible and sensible person like you steps in.
We don’t often give it a thought, but strays like dogs, cats, birds, abandoned cattle and all other ownerless animals are prone to illness and injury too. More so than the domesticated ones. The treatment can be a minor or even an extensive one. The recovery can be slow and tedious. All this requires expert and experienced veterinary resources. Doctors, care takers, medicines and medical equipment require a regular inflow of finance. Just like any other charitable organization, without getting sufficient funds every month, we would find it difficult to function. All the in-patient animals who depend on our staff for nourishment and care, would be at risk the most. Intricate planning and judicious use of resources has ensured the progress of JCT but there is still scope for more. We want no homeless creature in Ahmedabad to be left to die on the side of the road. As far as humanly possible, help will be given to any mute soul in suffering brought to our notice.
You play an immensely vital role. Your funds can be the difference between life and death for a puppy, kitten, hatchling or a snake. Your generosity can determine whether sun has set on a creature or the rays of a new dawn will brighten up its life. Also, bear in mind it’s not all about medicine. A significant part of JCT activities involve creating awareness about coexistence with nature. Our programs are particularly directed towards attracting school children and youngsters to this crusade against apathy towards animals and environment. Catching them young and infusing them with love for nature is the way to save nature!
This is your chance to save a life; to spread joy; to alleviate misery; to bring more love into this world like God intended. Go a step further from liking and hearting pictures of puppies and kittens on Instagram. All those hearts, likes and comments put together do not lessen one minute of anguish for a creature. But your financial aid will.
Don’t wait for others. Be the change you want to see in the world.
