Hunger-free lockdown for strays
When the COVID lockdown shut the societies, markets and food joints that street dogs lived off, the trust took on feeding over 600 dogs a day across Ahmedabad.
Overview
A city that closed, and the dogs that lived off it
COVID-19 did not only reach human lives. Urban strays depend on people entirely for what they eat, and thousands of them were suddenly fighting to survive and dying of hunger while the city stayed indoors.
The trust took on the responsibility of feeding over 600 dogs a day across different parts of Ahmedabad, to save as many street lives as it could.

Challenge and solution
Why a closed city starves its dogs
The challenge
- Street and community dogs depend on people for food entirely, and mostly live on leftovers from housing societies, food joints, marketplaces, hotels and restaurants. The lockdown closed all of it, and the dogs starved.
- The regular feeders who would have stepped in could not go out either, because they were keeping to the distancing rules.
What the trust did
- Took a vow to feed over 600 dogs a day, in different parts of the city.
- Ran the rounds by van, so a pack in one locality was not fed at the cost of another.
- Kept going for as long as the shutdown lasted, to save as many street lives as possible.
Long-term impact
A fed dog is a different neighbour
A well-fed dog guards the territory it lives in, which is what it gives back for the food. Proper food also builds the immunity that stops a street population catching and passing on seasonal and zoonotic disease — so people and dogs come through it together rather than at each other's expense.
Well-fed happy dogs are the best friends of humans.
